A place where Ancient Ancient armies can peacefully retire to...
Possibly.
Oh, and some pulp. A few things on 6mm SciFi tanks and stuff. And the toy soldiers. Especially the War of 1897... And now I seem to be starting on 20mm Napoleonics as well!

In the Great War in England in 1897 there is a little action by some some bicycle troops who used a bicycle mounted machine gun. Actually it's really a quadricycle mounted machine gun.
Since I was a kid, I've had an antique book on The War in South Africa, written by a correspondent right after the war, in ummh 1900 (oops). Amongst the lithographs was one of "The automobile at war" based on this photo: www.landships.info/landships/softskin_articles/images/armed_bikes_1.jpg
In some my wargames I have used bicycle troops, including a bicycle drawn machine gun unit. It would be fun to try to form a unit of quadricycle machine guns.
I like it!

A much clearer picture - sure I've seen that one before myself. It's going on my 'to do' list.

ReplyDeleteis a really interesting link
Couple of useful ideas there though a bit later than 1897. The use of bicycles certainly seemed to be very popular back then.
