Newhaven update, September 2016

One of the strange things about the school holidays is that I should have masses of free time, intend to do loads, then everything stops. Which basically means I haven't done much recently.

However, checking past posts pictures of Newhaven are pretty much out of date. So this first picture shows a view down Main Street - actually an amalgam of Main Street and Church Street from the original map I'm using as a basis.

This view from the river shows that the docks area still needs developing. The blue area to the right is simply the end of the board. More treesto do but most still haven't been based yet.

A view across the Park towards the University with the Police Station to the left. The Park clock is curently missing. The blue area is simply there because I haven't cut the relevant road section yet. I think the Police Station could still do with some railings.

Miskatonic University in place. I still haven't made the replacement building yet, so this is the old one.  Again, the blue area is simply the end of the board.

This shows the final arrangement of the University fence.

A view of the cemetary and church with the residential area in the background.

A view across the Park to the Police Station.

Wonder what a September 2017 photo will look like...

Going to Work in Newhaven

I've started the 'official paper' playtesting of the combat and movement charts to see how they work in reality - later, I'll go to the board and check out how well the movement charts work. It may need two sets of movement depending on the scenario - some scenariois will just use one or two of my A3 boards, others may use the whole 6 by 4 foot set up and I'd rather have 2 sets of movement rates than just one that leads to a very, very slow game on the large table. Initially, I'm just doing them with the basic factors rather than adding variable dice rolls.

So, first one, Going to Work in Newhaven:

Being dependent on the tides, shipping on the Miskatonic is a twenty four hour activity. As a consequence, my job often required me to either start or leave work in the middle of the night.

From my apartment on West Street I would walk to Main Street, turning right at the graveyard. Past the graveyard, a left through Peabody Park was my usual route taking me to the river. Hence I would go right along the river, past the diner to the warehouses where I worked.

Being a good cautious Catholic, and well aware of possible night time travails, I naturally made a point of always carrying both pistol and crucifix!

On the night in question I was due to start my shift at midnight. I left home early at a steady pace, intending to leave plenty of time for coffee and a light meal at the diner. It was a fine night, quite light with a full moon allowing good visibility. Though I naturally took my flashlight there was sufficient illumination even in those areas away from the few places covered by street lighting.

As I approached the graveyard I was aware of a presence. Drawn through the gates I could see a figure sitting on a large tomb. It appeared to be a girl or young lady; concerned for her safety I approached calling out to her. She faced me, moved off the tomb and approached. It was with a sense of horror I now noticed the wings… the being was a lamia! Quickly I held my crucifix before me as I retreated, feeling the pressure of the lamia’s will as it attempted to ensnare me… With a tremendous effort I threw off the pressure in my mind and managed to get through the gates. Fortunately the lamia appeared unable to leave the confines of the churchyard and I was free to continue.

(A lamia is classed as a monster with a (psychic!) attack of 3 and defence of 2. The crucifix and his faith meant that the worker had an attack value 3 and defence value of 3 against monsters - the crucifix is considered to be a hand weapon against a supernatural monster. Against a physical attack it would not. Assuming both sides throw the same dice score, the lamia attack (3) was met with a defence of 3 and the attack was a draw – it failed. The worker had an attack value of 3 against a monster defence value of 2 so his attack succeeded – the worker was therefore able to break away and continue his journey to work).

Gathering my breath as I walked through the park I was aware of the bushes and trees rustling. To my horror I realised that one of the trees was moving towards me… Again I was forced to beat a hasty retreat from danger. Happily, I had seen it in time and was easily able to outpace the monster and leave the park safely…

(Walking trees are classed as either large monsters or leviathans.  Depends on the size of the tree, but in a small park it’s a slow large monster. Still, if he had been trapped by it, His attack/defence value of 2/1 would have been a problem against the 4/3 value of the tree. Best to run and not get that close. This particular ‘incident’ caused me to look closer at the combat factors of leviathans and I have changed them.)

The walk along the river was happily uneventful – it had been several months since those stories about strange batrachian looking people attacking strangers. As I thankfully drank my coffee I resolved to leave Newhaven at the earliest opportunity, or at least move to the day shift – as it happened, an opening appeared shortly after in the company offices in Innsmouth, so I gratefully accepted…

The Park

Finished some of the park buildings...

In keeping with the rest of the town I'm going with a muted colour scheme. The red is Vallejo Model Colour 926 Red, the green MP 13, deep bronze green - a colour also used, for example, on the warehouse. They have been put on as a single coat, again to help allow the underlying mdf to dull things down a bit. Apart from a couple of bits of od gold the rest of the buildings have been left unpainted.

The bandstand is going to look a bit big for the park... it measures out at about a third of the park's width... but it's quite a nice model. Although it looks as though I've used two different reds here that's just an effect of the underlying mdf colours.

The public convenience has a few issues - quite awkward to assemble and it's going to be a tight squeeze for anyone to get in -  the screen needs to be 5/6mm further away from the main structure. Lots of cardboard in this one - and could have been easily designed in a way that would have made assembly a lot simpler. The basic shape includes several separate card panels - very difficult to set in place when they could have been done as a single foldable sheet. Still, it looks good and, now it's finished, I like it.

The simplest model of this trio - the ticket kiosk. Easy to build, parts fit together well, paints up well. Not certain how much I'm convinced about it being a kiosk - perhaps an addition of a desk or something.

Need a fence to go round the park, once that's sorted I'll start putting everything together.

The fleet's in town

'Gentlemen, I've called this meeting because it has been brought to our attention that there is a serious weakness in our coastal defences. To  overcome this weakness a new series of coastal patrol boats has been commissioned. There will be three variants. These are an anti-submarine vessel, hull numbers assigned 21-29, a torpedo boat, numbers 31-39, and a gunboat numbers 41-49. It is proposed that, at some point in the future, more vessels will be commissioned if the threat developes.'

'Sir, if the threat includes submarines, then surely we will also need squadrons of minesweepers?'

'Ah yes, the threat. Now, as to the exact nature of the threat...'

Found a few guns so finished them off - apart from 1 which still needs the gun. At some stage I may also add a machine or two to them as well, certainly to the gunboat, but that's for the future. Meanwhile, anyone know of a UK manufacturer of 28mm  Lewis guns or similar on naval mounts?

So, the boats are:

Number 21, US Arkham, ASW/depth charge carrier as already seen. I've tried to match the printed grey with a reasonable grey paint - Valiejo Model Colur 70.990 Light Grey.

Numbers 31 and 32, USS Innsmouth and USS Providence, Torpedo boats - Innsmouth still to receive it's gun. The torpedo tubes are far shorter than they should be, but any longer and it would look ridiculous...The mounts are simply two 5p pieces on top of each other.

Number 46, USS Pickman, gunboat.

All names based on Lovecraft, of course, and at some point I will produce the USS Miskatonic, USS  Dunwich and USS Kingsport. And possibly a USS Newhaven.

I've also painted up a few extra crew members so they aren't quite as undermanned as they were. Still need a couple more officers though. Crews have all now been finished with my usual gloss vrnish.

Arkham House Diner

I couldn't make an 'American' town without including a diner, and the cantina was the closest thing there so...

It proved to be an annoying kit - very tight joints, needed a lot of work and still not fully OK. So, decided it would make a good test bed for painting. Thinned down wash of white for the walls and orange on the brickwork. Quite happy with the results - the orange doesn't look any different to unpainted wood on the photos but the 'tinge' of colour is there on the model. Perhaps a second coat in future? The single white coat on the walls gives a nice, quick and suitably neglected effect that seems to fit the overall look I'm after.

So I'm considering the test a reasonable success, and the Arkham House Diner will find a place in Newhaven.

Map of Arkham

Not sure how useful this will be in terms of my own project, but this site has a very good map of Arkham on it:

The site is an excellent source of information on the Cthulu Mythos generally, well worth visiting.
