| For those unfamiliar with the Trigan Empire (see Rob's comments on my last post) this was originally a comic strip series starting in the late 60s. There have also been various book/graphic novel versions, last one seems to have been in about 2020. This is my 1978 copy of the original hard back graphic novel. |

| As for 'Shades of the Trigan Empire' comment itself, yes, quite heavily influenced by the Roman Empire, except it was set on an alien planet in the distant past and the Trigans themselves were 12 foot tall! |
My goodness that's a real blast form the past, I used to love "Look and Learn" when I was a youngster, first time I saw proper wargame figures as opposed to Airfix figures was in that magazine as well. Happy memories!!

ReplyDeleteI was another 'Look And Learn' kid. I remember a series of articles on the history of gunpowder and guns, which appealed to the junior wargamer no doubt..

ReplyDeleteMy Aunt used to send L&L to the colonies once a week with The Sunday Post (You have to be Scots to understand that one). I remember a series of small colour drawings with uniforms which I collected. Not sure what happened to them.
ReplyDeleteI have to confess - the name Look and Learn I remember, I know I got it, I can't remember anything that was in it, but that must be where I first saw the Trigan Empire stories!

ReplyDeleteI'm sure it ran as series for a while in comic I used to get, which one I don't recall - Eagle? Another I have fond but VERY vague memories of was Jason January. I think these comics ended and switched to 'The Ranger' which was just text stories with one illustration as a header - Barrdock of the Bombers being a favourite and there was another IIRC called 'Sergeant Duff - he fought with his boots clean'.

DeleteBack in the day I didn't know that either. I guess I was reading at some intermediate stage of the stories. Don't ask me where. I only had access for a few months and then I moved to rural Ontario with the nearest WH Smiths 45 miles away. :-( I recall the evil Cato troops with the green skin and funny helmets. Also the balloons instead of parachutes! And the battleships with the ram fronts, paired with 1950s jets. Great Stuff! I've been collecting misc stuff for gaming. Some plastic jets from the dollar store, etc.
