Vanha Swordsman

During my recent spell of casting I had (continue to have) serious problems casting the Vanha archer. It became increasingly obvious that it wasn't viable any more. So a new mould is in order, but they're expensive and I needed morte than just an archer to justify the cost...

When I did Aquiland and Nemidian moulds I sorted an officer for them. OK, new project, Vanha officer. Basically cut the spear off a Vanha spearman and replace it with a suitable sword. I now have masters for Vanha swordsmen...

Not sure how well they'll cast though - the sword is very thin and doesn't do all that well when attached to other figures. I can but hope.

    1. If it casts, so do I. The original intention was simply to create an officer and help fill a space in a mould, if it castes OK it will also be used as a swordsmnan unit as well.

  2. Excellent work..... and do get a new mould to keep this range alive and complete.

    1. Concentrated a lot on the 20mm Ancients of course - but there are probably still a few obvious S&S conversions I can do.

    1. With the benefit of being a simple conversion. I think Greenwood and Ball missed quite a few good oportunities to extend their ranges, for the S&S range this is especially true as regards the provision of officers.

  4. Interesting/fiercesome sword!

Would it be possible to reinforce it near where the blade meets the hilt by adding a thin coat of epoxy to thicken and strengthen the blade slightly before making the mould?

    1. It isn't that kind of problem - it's simply quite a large but thin area and the metal tends to stop flowing before it reaches the end. In fact, the sword on one of the 'masters' isn't quite complete but looked pretty nasty so I've used it anyway! Not one of the two in the picture.
