Looking at Minifigs S&S Picts

Just a quick post before I start going over my Partizan pictures... Relating to a discussion that seemed to develop over my last post!

I mentioned using the Minifigs S&S Picts in my Achaemenid army. This lot are the Pictish archer and chieftain repurposed as Ethiopians.

This is the unit in action in a Thermopylae re-enactment I did. Next to them are some later shieldless Greeks pretending to Lydians. On either side of them are some Garrison figures - the range I describe as 20mm to distinguish them from the later, bigger Ancients figures. - in reality they are 25mm.

Now, the point of this is that all of these figures are equivalent in just about every way. Design costs covered a long time ago, figures all 70s, figures all ones that you would expect to use as part of units in an army.

So what is the difference? Well, for Garrison figures I would charge £1.25 whether they are historical or S&S. The Minifigs Greek  goes for £1.85, with officers/musicians 10p more. The Picts? £3.25 each. Nearly twice the cost of the historical figure!

Not going to comment except with a ?

  1. Agreed the Garrison S&S range is well priced and a great looking range. I wouldn't mind a unit or 2 of the minifigs fantasy but not at that price.

    1. These days I am quite happy buying 'spot' figures, but for units they are way out.

  2. And splendid they look, whether raiding the Aquilonian Marches or crossing the Hellespont! I’ve just been looking at the pricing more closely - the horses in the S+S range are actually cheaper than the humans, infantry or cavalry, which definitely seems weird!
And the other great thing the Garrison range has/had in comparison with Minifigs - aside from some great monsters - are/were the chariots and mammoth (did you ever manage to sort the mould out?). And (the very Marvel-lous) Thoth-Amon!

    1. Minifigs Ancient horse £2.80, S&S horse £3, Ancients rider £1.85-£1.95, S&S rider £3 -£3.25 - here, I compared standard Medieval to S&S Knights. So an Ancients mounted figure about£4.65, an S&S knight plus horse at least £6. For comparison, Garrison Medieval or S&S knight plus horse £3!
As for the Garrison mammoth - not really looked at it. Should be quite easy to solve if it was really worth it - make another tusk and drill out the socket in the head a bit. Always possible at some point I suppose.
