A couple of French generals

During my last Napoleonic bout I had started painting a few mounted generals/officers. While working on the Bavarians I thought I'd finish a couple of them...

It's one of the horde of figures I can't find in my catalogues.

I don't have a specific horse for these so have just used one that looks reasonable! These will usually act as generic French generals. Or Prussian.

Very much a basic paintjob!

20mm Napoleonic 'Restart'

As in, I've been casting a few figures to get battalion strength numbers and prepping them.

So far I've prepped three battalions and I'm working on a fourth.

The first lot are foot dragoons. This lot were cast ages ago and have been waiting patiently in the wings.

The Bavarians are conversions. Still thinking what colour to paint the uniform - Andrea Blue is my current favourite. I actually converted three different figures - two backpack variations plus these with a slung roll/blanket. This was because a number of different states used that style of helmet and I wanted to vary the figures.

This lot will represent a Neuchatel battalion. My French are going to be very short of infantry in traditional blue!

The other battalion I'm working on is from Brunswick - I'll undercoat them black and probably just do straight black webbing on black uniform - don't know if the result will be acceptable but...

42mm Hussars 'finished'

These are the ones I bought cheap a couple of years ago.

Finally got round to looking at the last two units...

I haven't done anything other than go over paint loss so they are still pretty basic.

This lot are obviously Russian! The horses had quite a bit of paint loss so I went over them with chocolate brown... not quite a match and looked patchy. Gloss over the top and on the models you can barely see a difference - but the photos look a lot worse!

Meanwhile, after a week or so of doing very little on the wargames front finally got some casting done - hopefully I'll manage a bit more over the next few days. I really need to get some of the 20mm Napoleonics done!

Lamming Egyptians Review

As well as the Assyrians at the head of this blog I had the beginnings of a Lamming Egyptian army. Although I have posted about them before it was a few years ago and I didn't do them as a Review.

Though one reason for this is that it is quite a small army...

Have to admit I liked the ground effect on the bases of some of these.

This shows the difference between the early Lamming spearman and the later one with separate spears and shields.

Size-wise the army looks a lot bigger if I include a unit of the spearmen that I had designed (these are the ones that were supposed to be compatible with Garrison 20mm!)

And main target achieved.

In the sense that all of Steven's things have now been moved!

 Area cleared...

...Area filled...
Area that needed clearing....
... And with most of Steven's stuff moved it's left  to Sandra to finish off - some things still being left, including Dusty Bin...

Sorting some shelves

On the one hand, this is a wargaming activity, on the other hand that isn't the main objective...

The shelving is about half of the amount I originally used, the rest now being in my new shed. However, the top and bottom shelves were originally used for storing figures, etc. The shelving to the left will soon be cleared and used for the moulds I've had made - the moulds with the prefix 'RY'. Because I'm not so concerned about being able to get to moulds quickly I've put more on each shelf to save space. It doesn't matter because my Tiranti won't fit the things but my 12" are still all over place - to the right and mixed with lots of other stuff.

This is something I should have done months ago - the moulds had been scattered all over the shed and were really inaccessible. So I've taken down my old wargames table and everything is now together again.

'Real' reason for doing this? My son left a lot of stuff behind when he left home and even though he's had his own place for a couple of years now still no sign of him taking his stuff back. Meanwhile, where it was being stored was in the way - so now I'm clearing the space so it can be stored in the shed!

Hills

Terrain has always been a weakness of mine. I'm currently trying to rectify this is some ways, the latest being the acquisition of a few hills.

This lot are from S&A Scenics.

Latest Moulds

Still not getting anything done as far as figures go simply because other things have taken over - some work outside when weather OK, started sorting out the 'original' shed (which means getting all my moulds sorted at last!) and have started picking up tuition sessions.

However, one wargames update - two new moulds have arrived.

This one is the one of most immediate interest - early Persian cavalry, a headswap from the robed Guard cavalry archer. I've also included a couple of things of use in pulp gaming...

This one is for more long term interest - Libyans, Hollywood Philistines, couple of Ethiopians and some Persians. This mould should be seeing a lot of long term use if only because Libyan armies need a lot of figures!

The hope is that I might (?) get some casting done this weekend.

Some Grant phalangites

One way and another I'm not getting much done on the wargaming side at the moment - mostly I'm chopping out hawthorns on a hedge and putting a boundary fence in!
The figures themselves are quite a neat conversion. Another four would have been nice to make up the unit - I'll probably add another element of an officer, standard bearer and two musicians to make the unit up.
The notes I got from Harry described them as '44 Phalangites converted from Greek musicians with wire pikes and soldered on shields.'  This is a bit inaccurate - the base figure is actually an artillery crewman.
They appear on page 97 of The Ancient Wargame though Grant had a few more than I got.
