Attic update... Sorcerer's Cave!

Considering the time I spent looking for this for the Antarctic scenario - turns up in a box, even better 'find' than the Roman fort!

    1. It's basically a dungeon why you draw random tiles forthe passages - I'll do a game later. My first encounter with what I assumed to be this was at a convention in the 70s. Phil Barker was hawking a prototype of a game he said was by 'a couple of lads in Scotland'. Ian Beck and I took the bait and decided to have a go. The game was a bit different to the final version - Phil made a point of being the 'hero' - Conan, of course, so Ian and I were just average Joes who went in first, Phil following later. We came across a bear (not in the final version), failed to befriend it but got past it. Phil, being a hero, managed to befriend it. Ian and I then encountered a rock fall and couldn't go forward - the way back being through the bear and Phil... So we naturally decided to attack Phil and the bear. He kept saying 'but you can't win. Your factors aren't high enough, you're going to die'. So we attacked and died. Afraid Phil just didn't have the same sense of 'humour' Ian and I had...

    2. I would hardly class you and Ian as average Joes - I only met him the once but he was so full of great wargaming ideas and his rules were full of original mechanics; Pony Wars seems to be going through a renaissance at the moment and it was only this weekend that I was pondering using his Trench rules.

    3. Ian was a really nice guy and full of enthusiasm. Everyone was 'pal' to him. Other memories include him getting me on to lemon and lime (he was teetotal), shooting me in the back in a western game (he was supposed to be on my side). Before Pony Wars he did a Roman Coliseum - him and a few others from Halifax converted 2000 Airfix civilians as the crowd. Last time I saw that was in the attic of his parent's house, always wondered what happened to it. We lost touch in the early 80s and it was a really sad day when I met Steve Birnie and he told me Ian had been killed in an accident.

  2. A classic game, my introduction to the genre with Tunnels and Trolls. Mine was lost, left behind as I travelled with work, but saw one on ebay a few years ago and felt compelled to buy it!
