Paddle steamer 'New Providence'

Finished model. It's probably the one I like the most of my current batch - makes me almost regret sticking to my 'basic design'  and 'don't spend too much time on painting' criteria. This one, I almost feel like adding metal doors, portholes, anchors, 'proper' rails around the top deck... possibly a boat or two hanging over the side on davits...

Basic outline. I wasn't sure at first how to fit the paddles, finally went for just sticking them on the side of the hull!

Size check - designed for 20mm but fits well with 25mm figures. Masts aren't glued in - this is a good storage hack, plus reduces the risk of breakages.

Paddle itself is based on a balsa 'frame'. This was aligned to the top decking and 1mm card was used to give the impression of paddles beneath this.

Thin card over this lets me do the 'fancy' cut outs on the covers... I was originally going to use 1mm card, went for thinner stuff because it was easier!

Finished thing, with an mdf base covering the middle of the unit. Windscreens and portholes painted on (crudely!) as usual.

Size comparison of battleship, New Providence and cruiser. New Providence is a provisional name of course - it will probably have several identities over the years. Sizewise, the New Providence seems to be a pretty good balance. Must check it against Arctic Princess - suspect this size would be better there as well.

Personal view? My current favourite. The design works well.

  1. A splendid group of ships with just the right amount of detail for wargaming purposes.

    1. Thank you. The important point, of course, is 'wargaming purposes' - there is always the temptation to overdetail!

    1. I will admit to a certain satisfaction over them...

  3. I like that, though if you make another, it might be worth trying the paddles further back - my limited experience of paddle steamers like the Waverley is the wheels tend to be towards the centre. Given the size of the other ships, might it be wise to rechristen the battleship a monitor?

    1. Main reason for putting slightly forward was balance - needed wheelhouse, funnel and paddle to look like a unit and wheelhouse looked better forwardish. Not sure if I'll do another - if I did there would be a good chance that it would be central funnel/paddle and no wheelhouse.

Sizewise, it's more of a late ironclad rather than early battleship - late 19thC was such a period of flux, some of the coastal defence ones especially were quite short. Chances are this one will be designated as whatever a given scenario wants it to be - so although listing it as a battleship, that's going to be a place marker rather than final designation.

  6. That the ships are marvellous goes without saying, but the seaplane is making me really envious. I want one.

    Just a thought.....an air ship?

    1. Strangely there was an airship in the shop - couldn't see the price, thought about, then decided against. An airship at some stage is a probability, it's convincing myself that I can do one that doesn't look silly - but I can usually overcome my scientific training if I really think about.
