Cardace test painting

Going back to my attempt to build up a late Achaemenid National Army, the main infantry figure should be the Cardace/Kardaka infantry. Recently I've been trialling a number of infantry types based on Persian figures - then I had an idea.

Why not base them on Greek figures.

Only issue is that none of  the pictures have any of the Persian infantry wearing helmets - but why not?

I still have the option to do a head swap of course - but my present thoughts are that a straight paint job seems to be enough to produce a reasonable Cardace infantry figure.

  1. They must have Persian heads surely?

    1. Still thinking about it. It is known that Persian cavalry wore helmets, it is known that lots of contemporary illusrations etc were probably stereotyped depictions rather than accurate, so it would be a reasonable option for units designed to mimic Greek infantry to also wear Greek style helmets, especially for 'regular' units - though probably not for levies or irregular forces.
Having said that, Persian headgear is the preferred option and it's looking like simply cutting off the helmet crest and a bit of sandpaper may be a reasonable depiction of this anyway...

  2. I take your point regarding the possibility. But I have never seen them depicted with helmets nor their earlier incarnation. They were, after all, from relatively wealthy families by all accounts

    1. Agreed. But again - don't recall seeing any depictions wearing helmets, either infantry or cavalry. Yet there is an example of a supposed cavalry helmet found at Marathon, plus both Herodotus and Xenophon describe cavalry as wearing helmets. I'm trying to remember the 420(?) cavalry equipment list - can't remember if a helmet is listed there.
Basically, though, I am at the moment thinking of going more for the tiara conversion - plenty of time though - part way through a 50 figure heavy infantry unit and another unit of both late and early cavalry cast and ready for painting - as well as the other units that are 'paused' -so could be 2 - 3 months before I have to make my final decision on this.
