Refining the model

Or, at least messing about with it.

Warning. This post is chaotic. I'm trying things and there's no order to be found here...
Some modifications - things looking a lot more fleshed out.

Looking more like a usable suite of buildings - should actually be more of an n shape but this is so far the best fit to get all the facilities in.

This is the current status of the boiler area. Should be two coal bunkers, a ramp into the boiler room, Engineer's Office and one door into the mortuary. The yard should be bounded by fences a field, woods and a drop to a stream. Basically.

At least it looks almost like a garage. Buildings include laundry and various stores, etc. There should be a connecting building along the back.

Should be more wards at the back and they look too big but... at least they're there now.

Trying to add more detail - seating, lighting - but these bear no relation to the originals. Come to think of, neither does the road system or wards.

Actually, wards look quite good, just need a couple more. Note that the Nurse's Home is not the 'right' way round to the way you would think. My model suggests you are looking at the back - actually, it's the front. It faces inwards on the original - visitors come in through the gate, turn right and head for the wards. So the Admin parts face the wards with the kitchen at the other side.

The front of the Nurse's Home. Or the back. To me, the front, to just about everyone else the back. Even with a couple of wards here I'm still placing the labs in this building. As far as I know, Norman's Riding didn't have any labs or mad scientists. Except possibly me.
I was thinking about a few things on 'staffing' for a separate post but think I'll put those thoughts here.

Medical staff - real, often one junior doctor living on site, usually local GPs covered - pulp version more doctors. Matron ran the nursing staff, originally Matron Morgan, Matron MnGlenn when she retired. Not sure how many nurses - often 4-5 night nurses on the van in the morning.  There was a male charge nurse there called Mr Watson. I was a kid - most were 'Mr' to me. The vans and trolleys were operated by 2-3 drivers/porters, obviously not on together... My dad was the Engineer. There were usually 3-4 boilermen around, I can only remember the name of one of them, Mr Armstrong. Two gardners, originally the Head Gardner was Ernest Jones with his staff Joe McCoy - who took over as head gardner when Mr Jones retired. Can't remember the name of the one who became the junior replacement. Then there was the Hospital Secretary, Mr Harrison, who lived in the Lodge with his wife and family.

Now, weapons. It was a hospital, defenceless, right?

Come on, 1950s-60s...

OK, Dad had a shotgun, as did both gardners (not sure about the lad later?). Don't know if anyone else on site did, just the ones I went out with, but at least 2 more shotguns in the poultry farm a few hundred yards up the road. Add to those the usual improvised weapons - shovels, axes, hammers, mallets...

Suppose I'm going to have to start sorting scenarios now!

  1. What a great project so far. Not sure I fancy re-creating my childhood on the table, but it clearly works for you. I like the parkland trees in front of the house.

    1. They're actually meant to be a thick clump of conifers - over the years they provide cover to 'hide' the hedge/drop behind them plus providing Christmas trees for the wards and.... well, us... er...

  2. If my mind ran in that direction, this would get me thinking about my Aunt's old vacation lodge in the country which was on a corner of her brother's dairy farm. Old 3 story Lodge with spooky basement, new farm house, old hay and cattlebarn, 4 or 5 outbuildings, woods and pasture, lake a short walk away.......

    1. Perfect for a solo mini campaign or battle - you can 'see' the ground in your mind, have an idea of how some areas will be easier to traverse than others, visibility, etc. The other thing for readers is - familiar to you, exotic to them. My setup is no where exact/accurate, haven't got the right buildings, etc, but it does 'look' familiar.
