Music to paint by

In my youth I had a decent classical music collection on LPs. Still have them but don't play them because they haven't been downloaded on my PC...

Anyway, looking through ebay as I do (and picked up a couple of The Tiny albumns cheap in the process!) I idly started looking at classical music cds and realised something.

If you bought a decent second hand collection it would be cheap.

So I started looking...

40 cds for less than £1 each - and a good basis for a collection. I just have to sort out and rip the ones I want!

Some opera here, but no Wagner - want the Ring Cycle - and no Also Sprach Zarathustra - but pretty much everything else I want is there!

  1. Nice find. I tend to listen to spoken word CDs myself , or adaptions of books, usually by the BBC.

    1. When you look on YouTube there are thousands of books/stories/etc available. I listen to/watch quite a few myself. As for the cds, again there are dozens of collections on ebay at that sort of price per cd - well worth looking, I just chose one of the bunch that seemed to meet my 'needs'. They've now all been downloaded on my PC but haven't actually gotten round to listening to any of them!

  2. A nice collection Rob...
I must have a look on eBay...
I’m more of an audio book/ jazz fan myself but I am open to most things.

    All the best. Aly

    1. It's well worth the look - once you start looking at bulk buying second hand and accepting you won't want everything you get, especially on things like music cds (or the block of 72 Dr Who books I once bought) the unit price on the bits you do want goes down a lot.

  3. Can I suggest Music Magpie. Prices include postage..and if you buy Classic FM box sets they come as 3 and 4 disc sets.

  4. Not as easy to find, but although I have classical music in my mix, I have even more movie scores. There are lots of good ones out there, and you might find some composers you'll like and then that leads to searches for other works by them. Aside from thrift shops, you might check your local library as well. I'm assuming yours is like ours here in the colonies, but they have a good collection as well. Though normally not an issue, look at the tracks. Some movies have both a score and a soundtrack (different recordings) or just a soundtrack, which consists of songs that weren't written for the movie but are played during the movie. I don't care for them, though I'll admit to listening to the ones by Queen - Flash Gordon and Highlander

Used to be there were apps you could download and use them to record off the internet as well. There's thematic music as well on YouTube

For composers, try Basil Poledouris, Bruce Broughton, John Williams, James Horner, Alan Silvestri, Trevor Jones, Danny Elfman for starters, or, look online for movies that you liked and see who did their score.
