Finishing some 'S' Range G4s

At least, the markings on the base say they are G4s - but G4 is supposed to be 'Greek phalanx spearman receiving cavalry'. On the other hand, codes appear to have been more a case of optional ids amongst early Minifigs - there seem to have been a lot more Greek hoplite types than the catalogue suggested, often with the same code!

Anyway, as I said these figures were already half painted. I have to admit that although the figures are very basic I quite like them.

  1. Nice little figure - you did well to get hold of a proper amount there! - they look great Rob :) Do you have any of the contemporary Greek cavalry from this range?

    1. Ihave another 48 figure unit of these painted in my old university colours. As for cavalry, I actually have some of the original one piece castings! These days my Minifigs collection does tend to be overshadowed by Garrision. Don't know why:)

    2. :) - even so - you have some very nice old Minifigs - I picked up a couple of one-piece castings the other day - a Roman and a Gaul I think - don't know if these carry any markings as they are well buried in paint and base material - the Roman looks very much like the S range version. A bit before my time as they say - the first Minifigs I remember were the S range (the 72/73 catalogue versions).

    3. I've got a few unpainted - Assyrians, Persians, one Egyptian, can't remember if there's a Gaul or two. Apart from the Greeks though I haven't got round to painting any - a serious oversight to date!

    1. Yes, well, you know what they say 'A change is as good as a rest'. Must get back to my Garrison G3 project, it's behind schedule... but first I've checked out the Minifigs one piece Assyrian cavalry to do... turns out I've actually got nearly 40 of the things to do :(

  3. Do you recall the Great Minifigs Piracy scandal of the early 70s?
Widely reported in Wargamers Newsletter at the time.
Seems even certain shops were selling them as "seconds"It's possible they are still about, be it nigh on 50 years ago.Neville stopped it, probably sent some of his goons round.

    1. Remember it well - in some areas you got the impression there were more pirate figures around than real. I can remember a lot of things from back then. Do you remember the Phil Barker/Dave Milward feud for instance?

  4. These look very nice!

I have a Donald Featherstone book (can't remember the title) that has a chapter on how to make moulds and cast your own figures. The 'how to' picture shows him making a mould from a Hinton Hunt cavalry figure - brazen or what?

  5. No, I suppose it related to conventions? It's interesting that nowadays conventions of shows, one of two day shopping events really, are popular for anything other than playing competitive wargames.
It's just not a thing you watch, even if you are a wargsmer!
Demo games and showcase games have taken off, and are much better in promoting the hobby.I think.
We are really spoilt for choice nowadsys, and books in particular are a really bargain, full of colour, as indeed are the magazines.
Alongside all the new and newest ranges of figures, we can still buy our old figures!Amazing.

    1. The National Championships were where it all kicked off on an annual basis, but they were both from Birmingham so I assume it carried over locally as well. Dave was well known for needing the odd comfort break during games so Phil changed te rules getting them banned. So Dave found a way round involving a bottle. It went on for years!
