The second squadron of Minifigs 'S' Range Assyrian one piece cavalry.
They're generally in good condition though two horses have lost their crests. |
Armour is basically dry brushed. I did make the mistake of painting the bases green instead of sand but the filler hides most of it. |
Originally I had intended to leave the centre of the shield plain bronze. However, it didn't really look right because the centre has an embossed pattern on it - so I had to paint a centrepiece. |
They good nice Rob - I do like these early 25mm Minifigs and it's a shame I by-passed them in the day for what was then the newer PB range. I think by 70/71 the onesies had been replaced by the separate rider and mount - I have a copy of a catalogue from that time and it has basically the same 'A' range as the 72/73 catalogue. These chaps look very purposeful don't they - amazing that they could cast a piece with those spears as a one-piece - good work on those shields.
ReplyDeleteI started buying metal figures in 1970. The first few Minifigs were 'S' Range and all of the small number of cavalry were 2 piece. By 1972 the PB Range domonated and 'S' Range had gone - although the early PB figures were actually coded as 'S' Range.
DeleteLovely cataphractii Rob.Ive just obtained some S range billmen, they are very nice if a little small.
ReplyDelete'S' Range covered quite a variety of sizes at various times. No idea about timelines but have tended to assume the smallest 20mm types were very early and probably predated these Assyrians - I'm thinking just after JohnBee. But that's a guess.
DeleteNice…they are certainly solid looking chaps.
ReplyDeleteI remember having a few one piece medieval/ancient figures when I first discovered lead miniatures I am sure the ‘Normans’ I had were Hintons but I think the ‘Saracens’ may well have been Minifigs similar to these…
It was a long time ago 😁
All the best. Aly
Could be - 'one piece cavalry castings of Teutonic and Burgundian knights' from http://www.vintagewargamingfigures.info/rblack/ - so could have included early Saracens. They're not listed on the Ancients page, which is really my only 'area of expertise'.
