Second unit finished, this time on armoured camels. |
The camels are a mix of original '20mm' camels and the later 25mm ones. Basically the same camel, only the 25mm one has a bigger head and plume... |
Meanwhile I have managed to do a bit of casting and am currently painting up some of the robed Persian cavalry.
These are the camels I remember Rob. Im not certain the Persians had them but I certainly did in my original Persian army. Lovely.
ReplyDeleteApart from the supposed use of camels by Cyrus in his conquest of Lydia, I look at it this way:
DeleteThe Arabs used camels for cavalry. The Palmyrans used them as camel guards. The Parthians are supposed to have used cataphract camels. Camels were in daily use throughout the Empire as baggage animals.
So... Is it likely that there would have been at least some use of camels by Satraps in desert regions when it seemed appropriate? So all my non-Arab Persian camels are either being used by Cyrus and Xenophon was right, or they are simply unrecorded!
What an impressive sight! They really mean business…
ReplyDeleteI think it's a case of 'the more impressive they look, the less effective they are'.
DeleteSplendid looking fellows Rob…
ReplyDeleteThough I’m not sure I would want to be on board…
All the best. Aly
You would want it even less if you saw them head on. They're not all that straight, but I left them wonky because I thought it actually looked (more realistic?)
DeleteThere were certainly camels about, whether or not they had howdah's is probably questionable which means perfectly plausible on a wargame table.
ReplyDeleteI think 'questinable' is being kind, but if I'm going to use a 'fantasy' unit I might as well go all. Just need to find a suitable rhino model next:)
