The stupidity of Quora moderation

Someone on quora asked: 'You’ve got big battleships and aircraft carriers and even small destroyers are still pretty huge, why haven’t tiny ships like tanks but for water ever been used or why haven’t I ever heard of them if they do exist?'

Now, that is quite a reasonable question in Quora terms, so I answered 'For mounting big guns on small ships, look at monitors:' followed by a link to wikipaedia -

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monitor_(warship)

Quora has decided this is spam!

'Your answer has been deleted as it was found to be in violation of our Spam policy. To learn more about our Quora's policy, click here. If you think this is an error, you can appeal here.'

Anyone in the real world think my answer was spam?                                                                                                                                                                                                     Update received:     'Hi Rob,

Thank you for writing in.

We are very sorry for this experience. Your content was mistakenly removed as a violation of our spam policy, but it is now reinstated.

  1. No human being with any learning or intelligence would have found your response to be spam. My attitude would be to put Quora on notice: any more 'moderation' silliness on this level and I'm taking myself elsewhere. But then, I'm not a Quora follower/ subscriber...

These days, I'm thinking, too much reliance is being placed upon technology. That over-reliance is bound to go turnip shaped sooner or later. I'm betting sooner.

    1. It's a weird place. It's obvious most of the questions are trolling or people putting questions on they already know the answer to, but the overall effect is that it's often... funny.

  3. It's a very silly place, sort of a weird wide ranging cross between TMP and Frothers, sometimes a few snippets of intelligence and sometimes good for a laugh if you don't take it seriously.

  4. Quora seems to figure quite highly on Google's search algorythms. Certainly, I see it a lot when researching topics. I usually ignore it, I'm afraid, as, when I have followed through, I have found the answers a bit patchy.

    1. It's like Wikipaedia in the sense that answers are not always accurate so have to be taken with a pinch of salt. On the other hand, some are well researched.

  7. Quora are permanently banned from my email and my Google searches. If they mess you up, every time you look them up to see if they have fixed it they will score another hit for advertising revenue. The worse they do, the more they earn. They are also the very worst people ever for junk mail - you may never get rid of the smell. They have no useful function at all. They present themselves as a downmarket Pinterest, which is saying something, but they are not even close. Bad news all round.

    1. They do spread things across my junk folder... can't see them as a downmarket Pinterest though - Pinterest seems to be more photos/'artwork' rather than 'questions'.

  8. I have found the site to be what I term, strange, or odd.My mindset is around 1930 btw!
I am no sailor, but a little bit of thought about the proposal would surely have revealed aspects of fuel and crew capacity, range and buoyancy, would render the idea untenable.
As a quick thought, checkout lightweight dual purpose vehicles like dukw, scwimwagen, the civilian amphicar, believe two companies made this type, you can see they are neither chalk nor cheese.

    1. Thought is something many of the questions on Quora show a lack of.

    2. Yes, as a sorta Sherlock Holmes fan, the application of logic never goes amiss! So much on the interest today would have had my old school teachers reaching for the cane, slipper or blackboard rubber!!!

  9. Internet, not interest...frightening, would have thought the a.i. would have realised why I typed internet!?!?

  10. It's very hard to stop the emails from Quora. But I managed after some while though one or two a year slip through the spam service. Like James, I found it a little strange and some questions were the same.

    1. There do seem to be a lot of questions that are nearly identical to each other... basically, the whole of Quora seems to be a spam engine, but it can be a laugh...
