First two units of the Warrior figures painted. As these figures are in 10s I've used Garrison officers and standard bearers with them - you can easily see how well the two ranges fit together. |
The first unit is a Bactrian unit so I've decorated the tunics. Quite nice figures but the spears won't behave themselves! |
Nice work, they look great, the two ranges do work well together.
ReplyDeleteVery well. Probably the main reason they failed - they came out 10 years too late.
DeleteVery nice old skool figures Rob, who doesn't own a unit with bendy spears, I don't suppose you fancied cutting them out and replacing them with a steel spears? No chance of me doing that!
ReplyDeleteLikewise. In the past, probably, these days I just take it as part of the character of the figures.
DeleteThat last unit looks like typical Sassanid levy figures but with Achaemenid shields?
ReplyDeleteSorry, didn’t mean that to be anonymous.
DeletePretty much 'standard,' dress for old school Persians or Sassanids - give the figure a spara and it would do for either.
DeleteWonderfully colourful figures, they look terrific.
ReplyDeleteAlan Tradgardland.
I do like them. I'm painting them up as very old school.
DeleteThey look great, I really like the 'old school' style and it suits them very well! Do you have a favourite 'source' or inspiration for the colour schemes? ( I speak as one about to start painting my Persian DBA army..)
ReplyDeleteCan't think of a particular source - tend to do trousers plain because doing them striped or hooped is a pain, tunics often simplified version of a dot inside a dot, often with rays leading from them. They'rs basically very very simplified versions of the originals... Shields vary. Colours, basic palette, usually main colour red, which is pretty common, tend to keep away from the more accurate pastels.
Deletethanks, I am with you on the whole 'keep it simple' idea. The striped trousers are rather daunting, I admit! I read something that said the lower-status troops would probably mostly just wear plain wool or linen, which will be useful.
DeleteWouldn't argue with that, though if you look at 'National Costumes' of various people the lower class/status people often had very ornate costumes. I tend to just say ornate for better quality or native Persians/Bactrians, dull clothing for hill tribes or levies, brighter clothes if it 'seems right' or to distinguish two levy units from each other!
DeleteA lot of the MiniFig early Persian tribal warriors are similarly dressed. Maybe the odd difference in shield or helmet. Much like dark age peasant infantry
ReplyDeleteMy guess is that it's just a Mede spearman nominally based on figure 23 in the book. There was a Persian spearman based on figure 22. I'm just going to use him as generic hill tribe or similar.
DeleteLovely Rob and just the look Im going for with my Persians. I dont have any Warrior figures, well not any longer but if they reopen then I will be there. Lovely stuff, well done.
ReplyDeleteYou would not be able to get this range though - moulds and masters long gone.
