Life in Hospital - an update

Firstly, thanks for the kind wishes.

So, water retention slowly going away. They found a 'large cyst' in one of my kidneys, seems that this is nothing to do with my problem... so was expecting 2 specialists today, one for each issue. They didn't show. I'm expecting to be off work for at least 3 weeks though the protein loss may have to be checked for the next 18 months. Course of steroids expected for the protein loss that causes the water retention, no idea about the cyst.

Side effects of the water retention drug (Furasamol or something... I usually call it Fuzzy Bear) include confusion and memory loss - which gives me an excuse for rambling on a bit.

Hospital is... boring. Internet access is ssslllooowww... as in lots of things won't load. I've got a laptop with me but if I had the last lot of battle photos (still in camera) it would be unable to handle putting them on the blog.

Sleep limited. Up to six of us per cubicle, some are noisy at night. Can be 3am before get to sleep. Then at 6 they wake us up for a drugs round and tests. Which would be OKish if breakfast wasn't until 8. Most of the day spent semi conscious. Have nearly  finished 'The complete fiction of H.P.Lovecraft' though. Can't do  Sudoku at the moment - tried, brain won't let me. When I told the consultant he said something along the lines of 'Of course not' in a very matter of fact tone.

Anyway, Internet access allowing I'll do further updates as I can... if I'm going to be bored, don't see why everyone else can't share!

  1. You’re not scraping the paint off your craft knife and performing the surgery yourself?

  2. Trapped in hospital and rambling insanely? Sounds a bit too much like one of Lovecraft's protagonists. Let's hope the specialists show soon. I'm sure the workload is demanding in any hospital, but the cynic in me speculates they are either on the golf course or raking it in at a private clinic.

  3. Hope you feel more like your usual self soon. Hospitals can be not the most therapeutic environments to reside in. Get well, keep going forward, you’ll soon be up to a read go wrg 6th edition or something more interesting.

  4. Stick in their Rob. Ive found that to kill time I simply close my eyes and transport myself to a land where I have unlimited funds and am able to buy, build massive wargames collections.I think it was the drugs but it was a nice place to be.

  7. Oh dear! From my very limited experience, sleep was the best part of being in hospital. (Well, apart from the back rub from a personable young student nurse....)

  8. I can sympathise. Last year around the same time, I ended up in Hospital for a while due to peeing blood .Turns out it was Stones but one of the drugs they gave me made my arms swell to three times thier size..width, not length :-)
Telly rubbish, Internet virtually None existant, room "mates" snoring, groaning and pooting all night* Food? A Loose term for something I wouldn´t have fed to the proverbial hound for fear of killing it or it ending up in the next bed.

    Get well soon.

*hopefully when I got to sleep, I kept them up for the rest of the night with my snoring, groaning and pooting :-)

    1. You had that part more than me - very visible carrying 20lbs extra weight, but no pain. Telly expensive - forget it - internet, check, noise at night (why does everyone have to be moved between wards after midnight?), food so-so but I'll be very, very happy to get back to my normal diet.

  9. Hopefully you had a better day today Rob. Sounds fairly hellish so far Try planning your next army or cthulhu game. Dunwich perhaps, or dreamy kingsport?

    1. Not hellish, more boring and feeling wasteful. One problem is the way it happened - doctor's visit then 'go home, get some things together 'in case' they keep you in, then straight to A&E, I'll get in touch with them from ere, here's a letter' - so wasn't expecting to stay in for over a week, so not able to gather stuff together like resources.
