A place where Ancient Ancient armies can peacefully retire to...
Possibly.
Oh, and some pulp. A few things on 6mm SciFi tanks and stuff. And the toy soldiers. Especially the War of 1897... And now I seem to be starting on 20mm Napoleonics as well!

Senior moment...
Finished the Cataplanan/Teutonic knight unit (which I started painting in 2007!) and took it down to be gloss sprayed...
Apparently my aged brain thought it would be better to overspray them white instead...
Bummer! I know how it feels - only done it once and with matt black, luckily I spotted it immediately so only partially sprayed one figure who I quickly dropped in some white spirit - still needed quite a retouch. I've had much more trouble with varnish drying milky/cloudy. Good luck!
They are lovely figures Rob. Ive virtually finished the ones you sent me and they look great. Yes they are true 25mm, but they are cracking casts. Strangely when I was varnishing them, the varnish dried cloudy? maybe the range are cursed in some way.But I did manage to rectify them.
Rarely get the cloudy effect. Not sure, but when it does happen I think it's because of humid conditions or slight condensation on the figure - perhaps cold. Original idea was to do religious order type figures, say, red, white and black based surcoats/shields with crosses. Obviously not Christian for Cataplana but..
Ouch! I still have a bunch of Ral Partha miniatures undercoated with a spray that went wrong... that would have been around 1985? I feel your pain. They look like the Sword & Sorcery minis... I'm guessing they re-purposed / changed them for the fantasy.
That's right - Western King, Aquiland mounted Standard bearer, Nimidian knights. The S&S Range provides most of the figures for my Cataplanan and Vanha armies.
I’ve had every problem you can think of with matt varnish- drying gloss, streaking, lifting paint. I usually stick to artists quality brush on - Daler and Rowney. If you are touching up your £20 million Rembrandt, you want something that works. It is very matt but a bit viscous.
Recently I have tried Winsor and Newton professional artists matt spray and have been very impressed. Sprayed outside in 8 deg C and 90% humidity (it was about to rain) and no problems. It is in a black and silver can so easy to identify.
I wonder if the humidity problem is more likely with high temperatures as the air carries a lot more moisture at 25C than 10C for the same humidity but need to do a bit more investigation.
I think I should stress that those possible causes are my own thoughts. Low temperatures, for example, could cause a very thin layer of condensation on the surface of the metal.
Damn! I hate when this happens. Good luck in the salvage operation.
ReplyDeleteThanks... not looking good at the moment...

ReplyDeleteGood luck!
My second time. Last one was a group of Indian chariots 5/6 years ago. https://easterngarrison.blogspot.com/2016/12/always-check-can.html

DeleteOh dear....a few choice expletives were uttered, one imagines....I would certainly have gone a couple of levels stronger than OMG....!!
ReplyDeleteI decline to comment.
