Apocryphal Well Moves 1-3.

The first thing that becomes obvious is that changing the well and hills to an oasis makes a big difference. The next thing is that the table isn't wide enough to allow for the various outflanking moves. So, perhaps another attempt at some time using smaller forces.

One thing - a lot easier sorting the photos out. Question, though - does it detract from either the pictures or the story?

I think I'll just let  the pictures tell their own story.

As it stands, the first pictured move in The Ancient Wargame is Move 5. At that point there has been a lot of manoeuvring  that is simply proving impossible here. So, turning into a completely different battle even at this point.

Still, see how later moves go.

  1. So, you're NOT using 2nd edition WRG??? or a 7'x9' table?

Ah they were 'bigger' men in those days. Looks pretty darned good though.

  2. OK now I've read yesterday's set up post... nice close ups!

It'll be interesting to see how much the different rules affect the game (no long range for Egyptian archers etc)

    1. Archery is going to be a major difference - no way I would have used these tactics or layout for DBA, interested in seeing what happens - the Assyrian tactics look like a train crash happening. But then, the fun part is in seeing how it goes compared to how you think it will go.

  3. The games in the book do all seem to allow plenty of space to manoeuvre and units move freely without worrying about not having friends butted up against their flank. I guess they were simpler days back then, but behaving like this seems to result in instant death with so many of the rules in use today. Is that a good or bad thing?... who knows, a matter of choice I guess...

    1. Believe me, things were not simpler back then! Actually DBA is far simpler than WRG 3rd or 4th Editions I used back then - the rules used in The Ancient Wargame would have been one of these. As for instant death, I've seen quite a few battle only last a move or two because an army failed morale tests.
