'Ancient Battles for Wargamers' figures.

Apart from a lot of the figures in The Ancient Wargame I also have some of the figures that 'inspired' some of the artwork in Ancient Battles for Wargamers. In this post I'm just going to concentrate on that aspect - I'll go over the bulk of the figures later.

This is the 'official' list I've got of the figures and what they represent - from a list provided by Harry.

This one seems to be a pretty close match to the illustrations.

Again, you can see the resemblance between the two.

Can't say that I'm as certain about the resemblances between any of the Immortal figures and illustrations, but these seem to be the closest!
I don't usually  post illustrations direct from books, and note that the book is copyright 1977 to Argus Books Ltd. Less than 5% of the book is published here under fair useage for purposes of Education/Research

  1. Nice comps! You motivate me to pull this book off the shelf for a re-read.

  2. Great to see the illustrations and figures. I must admit I have never owned or seen inside this book. Looks well worth seeking out.

    1. Good book, it has a lot more illustrations than The Ancient War Game and includes battles/details/troops involved - but weirdly no pictures of the battles themselves (Battles Kadesh,Marathon, Granicus, Pydna).

    2. My guess is they didn't want to place all the figs on the table for the photo.....great book have a bunch of the old Hinchliffe miniatures myself (mostly Byzantines) always had a soft spot for them....in fact it was from photos of a battle between the early Byzantines and Persians using Hinchliffe miniatures that got me into the hobby, wish I could recall the book!

  3. I was reading this the other day after being inspired by your last post (I am lucky enough to have both books) - fascinating to see the figures that inspired the illustrations I'd always thought it was likely to be the other way around.

    1. Strangely, I didn't originally have a copy and didn't hunt one out until I got the figures!

    1. It's a very nice figure - I've an eight figure unit of these myself and they've won a few battles in their time.
