'The Ancient War Game' cover figures.

Although most of the figures in the book are Garrison, the cover features a load of 'new' Hinchliffe figures. Happily, those figures have been part of my own collection for a number of years...

The cover includes 3 units: chariots, open order Immortal archers and close order Immortals.
There are 3 chariots on the cover - no idea which ones from the photo.

Well, apart from this one, which is pretty obvious...

Frontal view of 3 of the others...

Back view of the other 3.

There are 30 Immortal archers on open order bases - though these were based by Harry, not Grant.

30 close order Immortals - I'll do other units as this series continues.

(Posted before but probably still best to include a picture of the cover):

I've started more units of Xerxes army; that series will intersperse with these over the next ??? or so.

  1. My guess, based on horse coloring and blazes, would be that the middle chariot on the cover is the one with black and tan horses in the right rear of photo one. I would also nominate the one in the middle of the second row in the same photo as the first in the cover procession.

    1. Could be - hard to tell, plus there is at least one other chariot not in the picture anyway that I don't have - so it's open to several possibilities. The greys not so much!

  2. Thank you - it's great to see all these old (toy) soldiers refusing to fade away - I still find the photos of old wargames (usually posed rather than games in progress) more inspiring than modern layouts. Not sure why, nostalgia I guess. The Gilder layouts in Chandlers Art of Warfare on Land still thrill and I do dally with the idea of recreating the Battle of Dara one day.

    1. I'm a great fan of nostalgia myself. I know modern figures are supposed to be better but...

    1. I can name a lot of countries that don't go back as far as 1974.

  5. Really enjoyed this post . I seem to be in a very nostalgic mood currently and this reminds me of the individual metal figures I spent hours in the shop ohhing and aching over before I got a few.
