Corps VIIM Carians

One thing I'm trying to do is set up a load of photos in 'named' folders on my hard drive linked to blog entries. Quite a few of the various Corps already have figures 'allocated' to them under other headings or in other posts - the Carians are one such. Most of the Marine units - easier to call them Corps and just stick and 'M' after it - wear Greek costume, although the Carians have a certain distinction... Anyway, these are 'old' photos given new prominence. Besides, it's 5 years ago since they appeared.
Hollywood Greeks - black leather armour and helmets! Have to admit I really like these figures.

One thing places these as Carians and no other. Carians are specifically mentioned as being in Artaxrxes army at Cunaxa and it was noted they were nicknamed 'Cocks' because of the red plumes on their helmets. So, to make it a true Carian unit I gave these a cockerel standard from the 25mm Gallic Range - you can almost see it on the front rank!
There are six contingents in the invasion army that wear Greek dress. I have four hoplite units to cover at the moment - the Carians plus three others based on PEA8, the Ionian hoplite. Another contingent, Cilicia, is supposed to wear the costume depicted by illustration 20 in Greek and Persian Wars - 20 is the picture of a shield... but Cilicia is in the hoplite region so probably means an extra unit in Greek dress. Another alternative is to use some of my Phrygians for some of these - Greek dress, Lydians for example as 'pre hoplite spearmen'. I'm also thinking of Aeolian Greeks (IXM) and, possibly, Pontus (XM) as peltasts.

Depending on how I do this, blog entries in the near future could be appearing in rapid succession as I give various units their (brief) place in the limelight. I'm also going through previous posts and the label Corps to these to make it easier to put them together on the blog.

  3. I really like the shield patterns. Do they march into battle singing the Hollies hit “ Hey Carian...” by any chance?
